“So having these last two years pretty much off, I really got to take a step back and look at my career and look at this organization as a fan”.
Cormier dipped right in an attempt to avoid a fainted Jones’ body blow and ended up with a face full of shin bone.
“If I’m going to sacrifice being the smaller guy, I think stylistically, Brock would be a fight that makes more sense”, Jones said. “So I don’t know [where to go from here]”. Especially if it’s Cormier who withdraws.
The highlight was when Jones said Cormier looks like a crackhead.
“I made it back man, such a handsome moment”, Jones said.
“The first time I watched it, I was uncomfortable with it, because it showed me talking in 2011 and saying how I would never want to do something that would harm the image of the sport”, Jones said. Sandwiched in between those fights was a non-title victory over another pound-for-pound legend, Anderson Silva, as Jones’ replacement on short notice at UFC 200. These two will meet in the main event of UFC 214 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
In the following slides, we preview the fight card and predict the possible outcome.
“Cormier is not a striker, he’s a messy stand-up fighter”.
The 30-year-old was returning to the Octagon at UFC 214 for the first time since being suspended for failing a drugs test last year.
Jones is notoriously meticulous in his preparation for opponents. Possibly. His post fight interview showed a honest and humbled Jones, even thanking his once hated rival Cormier for being an inspiration. While Jones lives his madcap life, Cormier is a former Olympic wrestler with a late-blooming MMA career and a stable family existence in the Bay Area.
Manuwa, meanwhile, is a knockout artist who is seriously lobbying for a boxing match against former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye. Try to understand this, though; Cormier is booed and Jones is cheered… That is until Saturday night. Yes, he stepped up and beat Silva on short-notice past year, but it did little to raise his stock in the eyes of fans. However, fighting his biggest rival and antagonist, I sense Jones will be at his best physically and mentally. It was closely contested, with Cormier, 38, closing the distance and trying to force Jones into a dog fight.
It won’t be Saturday, though.
Daniel Cormier has been a dominant UFC fighter, a great UFC heavyweight champion and has beaten some of the best that the light heavyweight division has to offer.
“A guy like Daniel, he has my full, undivided attention”, Jones said this week.
If these sideshows make big money for the organizations involved expect this to become the new norm in professional sports. “I was taking everything for granted and making mistakes”.
Jones did very well for himself on the ground, which was somewhat surprising considering how good Cormier is in that aspect of fighting.
